The electromagnetic spectrum allows physicists to classify different types of electromagnetic waves on the basis of their wavelengths and frequencies. What determines the wavelength and frequency of a given wave and distinguishes one wave on the spectrum from another is the amount of energy each wave carries -- specifically, the level of energy in the photons of each. This video segment adapted from FRONTLINE explores the different types of radiation represented by electromagnetic waves and how their properties vary.
