Sea Creatures

The largest and least explored place on earth is in the deep sea below the ocean’s surface. The fish and other sea animals of the deep sea employ many strategies to surprise their prey including ambush and camouflage by blending into the sea environment. The deeper you go in the ocean, the more unusual and unique the fish appear to be. Learn about the ghostly squid, the simulating jelly fish, the viper fish, and the gulper fish (among many others) in this video segment from Nature.

The following Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions are best suited for middle school students using this video in an English language arts or science lesson. Be sure to modify the questions to meet your students' instructional needs.

What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?

Frame (ELA) What is the difference between real and make-believe? Giving real characters or settings non-realistic or make-believe qualities is important to creating a fantasy story. How many fantasy stories can you name?

Focus (ELA) While watching the video segment, think of special non-realistic qualities you can give the creatures you see.

Follow Up (ELA) Write a fantasy story about the fish and other sea creatures in the video segment. Give them names and non-realistic qualities. Also, name the world in which they live, and create a plot. Remember to have a beginning, middle and end to your story.

Frame (SCI) What do you know about sea life? How many different kinds of fish or sea animals can you name?

Focus (SCI) How are the fish different as the scientists go 600 feet below the surface of the ocean?

Follow Up (SCI) Is there a connection between fish looking more and more unusual the deeper you travel into the ocean?
