Students practice column addition and lining up decimal points in the context of money. In the video clip, Harry takes Jenna on a date. When his cousin Harley shows up without his wallet, Harry must change his budget for the evening. Students record the changes to figure out the final amount left in Harry's wallet. The assessments provide more practice adding numbers in columns, and students are asked to troubleshoot an error in misaligned decimal addition.

Part I: Learning Activity
1. Read the following to the students: "Harry is going on a date with Jenna and has exactly $100 to spend. He plans to spend it as shown in the budget on Handout 1, but his cousin Harley shows up and joins them. In this activity, you will record how Harley's budget changes, and figure out how much money (if any) Harry has left by the end of the evening."
2. Distribute the Handout 1: "A Date for Three" .
3. Tell the students that they will now watch a video clip in which Harry works out his budget for the date with Jenna, and how he changes it throughout the meal. Tell them to watch the video carefully and use the handout to record the cost of the meals and desserts for the three diners. [Play the video clip twice, if necessary, for the students to record all the costs.]

5. Discuss student answers to the handout to see if students were able to correctly calculate Harry's final total. Be sure to discuss lining up the decimal points as well as the need to be careful when adding single digits (< $10) and double digits (> $10).
