  • Career Profile: Synthetic Biologist Karmella Haynes

    This video produced by WGBH profiles Karmella Haynes, a post-doctoral researcher working in the emerging field of synthetic biology. Karmella explains how she uses biotechnology to build living machines, or devices, from genes. She then puts these devices into the cells of living things and studies the results. Haynes hopes that one day the devices she's working on will carry out complicated functions in human bodies, such as curing a disease. The video demonstrates how Karmella is using synthetic biology to detect cancer cells before they spread.

    This video segment from Design Squad features the work of Howard Pryor, a tissue engineer and doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Pryor demonstrates a device he is working on to replace diseased livers. He explains the challenges of artificially engineering a human organ, including getting blood to flow through a device for processing just as it would through a liver. He also details the design process. This resource is useful for introducing components of Engineering Design (ETS) from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to grade 9-12 students.

  • Career Profile: Chemist and Biologist Catherine Drennan

    This video produced by WGBH features Cathy Drennan, Professor of Chemistry and Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Cathy explains that her research focuses on microorganisms that live off carbon dioxide, one of several greenhouse gases that are widely believed to accelerate global warming. Specifically, Cathy is investigating how a protein inside these microorganisms converts carbon dioxide into energy. Ultimately, Cathy hopes humans might apply what they learn from microorganisms to remove carbon dioxide from the environment.

  • Career Profile: Quality Control Microbiologist

    This video produced by WGBH profiles Kim, a quality control microbiologist at the biopharmaceutical corporation Bristol-Myers Squibb. Her company makes a range of medicines to treat many diseases, and it's Kim's responsibility to make sure the products she works with are safe and effective before they reach patients. For example, she tests the purity of as many as 100 water samples each day because water is one of the main ingredients in drugs. Kim explains the importance of quality control in drug manufacturing, and how new biotechnology tools help her do her job.

    In this video produced by WGBH, high school and middle school students participating in the Amgen Biotech Experience use real-world research equipment and techniques to separate a genetically engineered protein from other molecules in a cell. As an industry research scientist explains, this process—called protein purification—is commonly used in research and development of disease therapies. The video also explores some of the reasons people have for choosing a career in science, including the rewards of knowing their work is helping others.

    In this video produced by WGBH, high school and middle school students participating in the Amgen Biotech Experience make use of research equipment and techniques identical to those used in academia and industry to separate DNA. Data generated from this kind of experiment can help researchers analyze DNA and the genetic make-up of humans in an effort to understand how and why diseases develop that affect millions of people. This kind of research can also lead to the development of drugs for disease treatment and/or vaccines for disease prevention.

  • Recombinant DNA Lab in the Classroom and in Real-World Research

    In this video produced by WGBH, high school and middle school students participating in the Amgen Biotech Experience make use of real-world research equipment and techniques to insert a recombinant DNA molecule into a bacterial cell. By using precision instruments and techniques, scientists can insert foreign genes into bacteria. Understanding how proteins behave inside cells can lead to a better understanding of human diseases such as Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.
