Everyday Math for Preschoolers

Children are never too young to learn math. As they explore their world, they are learning to count, discriminate shapes, sort objects, and see patterns. The Everyday Math for Preschoolers collection aims to help young children develop positive beliefs about themselves as mathematicians and create a foundation for success in school.

  • Muffin Is Missing | Everyday Learning

This animation takes children on a hunt through the backyard to find Muffin, a missing cat. Students will need to use their knowledge about counting by ones and twos, sorting by color, and patterns to reunite Muffin with her owner in time for dinner.

    Grades: PreK-1
  • Clean-Up Time | Everyday Learning

This stop motion animation teaches sorting and graphing skills by showing children how to clean up a very messy room. Children see toys sorted by color, type, and shape. Next, the results are graphed so that children can see how the number of each toy compares with the others.

  • That's a Pattern! | Everyday Learning

In this interactive, children are asked to complete a series of six simple, random patterns by choosing the missing image. The player can pick between four themes: space, polar animals, insects and flowers, and dinosaurs. This interactive is available in both English and Spanish.

  • How Many Birds? | Everyday Learning

Follow three young bird watchers as they count how many birds they can find outside, in this video from the KET Everyday Math for Preschoolers collection. The bird watchers count how many cardinals, blue jays, and goldfinches they can find outside, then learn how to chart the results.

  • Farmer Fred's Friendly Feeders | Everyday Learning

Farmer Fred’s animals are hungry! In this interactive, children help feed a dog, pig, cow, and horse by pairing the numbers one through 10 with the appropriate groups of hay, apples, corn, and bones. This interactive is available in both English and Spanish.

    Grades: PreK-1
  • Two Days Away | Everyday Learning

It’s exciting when a friend comes over to play! This animated poem teaches students about simple concepts of time like night vs. day; and today, tomorrow and yesterday; while our narrator waits for his friend to arrive.

    Grades: PreK-1
  • Many Ways to Make a Whole | Everyday Learning

This video features "Many Ways," a song written and performed by Mr. Steve from PBS Kids. Math concepts like part, whole, half, quarter, and fractions are introduced in this song using familiar examples.

    Grades: PreK-1
  • Hop to It! | Everyday Learning

This video from KET instantly engages preschool students by using bright colors to light up numbers and a young child to demonstrate each number through various body movements. Since most preschoolers are kinesthetic learners, this video is a good place to help them learn to recognize the numbers one through ten.

    Grades: PreK-K
  • Shape House | Everyday Learning

Being able to identify basic shapes and how they relate to each other is the foundation for understanding more complex geometrical concepts that we encounter in day-to-day tasks. This short video from KET demonstrates how shapes fit together by showing preschool students how to build a house out of shapes.

    Grades: PreK-K
  • Measuring Is Fun! | Everyday Learning

How many books high is the chair? How many teddy bears will you have to stack to reach the top of the rocking horse? Click each item to add one on top of the other and then click the number on the left to see if your answer is correct. Early learners practice non-traditional forms of measurement in this original interactive from KET.

    Grades: PreK-1
  • Shapes All Around Me | Everyday Learning

This video from KET helps preschool students identify the shapes that surround them every day so that they can begin building a foundation for skills they will need in the future. Children often view shapes as play things like blocks and other toys. But being able to identify basic shapes and how they relate to each other is the foundation for understanding more complex geometrical and problem solving concepts.

    Grades: PreK-2
  • Patterns Repeat | Everyday Learning

This original KET video uses a fun poem about shapes, colors, and animals to help preschool children remember that a pattern repeats. As the video closes, children are asked to make up their own patterns.

    Grades: PreK-K
  • Making Ten | Everyday Learning

Preschool students will enjoy discovering the way different numbers can add up to 10 in this original KET video.

    Grades: PreK-K
  • Shape Hunt | Everyday Learning

This video from KET gives preschool students the terminology they need to describe the specific characteristics of circles, squares, rectangles and triangles so that they may identify these shapes in familiar objects. Young children will see a circle and call it a ball or a square and call it a block. Being able to identify basic shapes is the foundation for understanding more complex geometrical concepts that we encounter in day-to-day tasks.
