Expand/Collapse Math + Arts

This collection of lesson plans uses dance, drama, music, and visual arts to teach math concepts.

  • Math + Arts | Shapes & Patterns

In this lesson, students will watch videos about shapes and identify shapes in their environment and in art.

    Grades: PreK-1,13+
  • Math + Arts | Shapes into Sculptures

In this lesson, students will identify 2- and 3-dimensional shapes as well as create shape drawings and sculptures.

    Grades: PreK-1,13+
  • Math + Arts | Abstract Sculpture & the Attributes of Cubes

In this lesson, students will create cubes and identify the attributes of a cube, including discussion of edges, faces, vertices, and angles.

    Grades: K-2,13+
  • Math + Arts | Chinese Music & Dance: More or Less

Students learn about Chinese culture and the concept of greater than and less than. After watching a student performance of a Chinese song and dance students are taught the difference between locomotor and non-locomotor motions. Students are asked to pay close attention to the number of musicians and dancers and apply the concepts of greater than and less than.

    Grades: K-2,13+
  • Math + Arts | Jack & the Giants and the Math Challenge

In this lesson, students create and solve a word problem related to counting money, develop a script for a short scene, and perform it using the elements of performance.

    Grades: 1-3,13+
  • Math + Arts | Geometric Quilts

In this lesson, students will create a class quilt of nine patch paper quilt blocks using geometry.

    Grades: 1-3,13+
  • Math + Arts | Shape Mobile

In this lesson, students will create a shape mobile of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes made from geometric shapes.

    Grades: 1-3,13+
  • Math + Arts | Dance Space

In this lesson, students students explore locomotor and non-locomotor movement and calculate the area needed to perform the African-American dance Zudio.

    Grades: 2-4,13+
  • Math + Arts | Jack & the Zero Clan

In this lesson, students will create and solve a word problem related to adding and subtracting within 1,000, develop a script for a short scene using dialect, and perform it using the elements of performance, specifically acting, speaking, and nonverbal expression.

    Grades: 2-4,13+

  • Math + Arts | Fractions in Music

In this lesson, students explore the relationship between fractions and musical pitch.

    Grades: 3-5,13+
  • Math + Arts | Abstract Sculpture & Cubes

In this lesson, students will form cubes and discuss their attributes including edges, faces, vertices, and angles.

    Grades: 4-6,13+
  • Math + Arts | Jack & the Giants: Jack Spends His Pay

In this lesson, students will create and solve word problems involving money (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals), and develop a script for a short scene and perform it using the elements of performance.

    Grades: 4-6,13+
  • Math + Arts | Graph a Dance
