  • The Lowdown | Living Wages in CA: Ratio and Rate in the Real World

    In this KQED infographic, find out how much an adult in different-sized households needs to make to pay for basic monthly living expenses. In the accompanying classroom activity, students solve real-life problems involving rate and ratio that involve calculating whether minimum wage in their state is a living wage. They learn whether minimum-wage pay can cover expenses such as food, housing, transportation, and medical care. They then compare their findings with data shown on bar graphs representing living wage and minimum wage in California. To get the most out of this activity, students should be comfortable with arithmetic with dollars and cents into the ten thousands. At first, the squad must find a way to ensure standard measures of the ingredients. When this proves only partially effective, they must determine how to make the mixture five times stronger. In the accompanying classroom activity, students use measurement tools, mathematical knowledge, and cooperation skills to create a complete class conversion chart on the board from a 1/4 teaspoon to 1 cup.   • Real-Life Math | Restaurant Manager

    Restaurant manager Tad Peelen explains how he uses math in his work in this video from KAET. In the accompanying classroom activity, students complete an activity involving one aspect of math that Mr. Peleen mentions: determining quantities of food needed to cater an event, and in the process, converting among measurement units. To get the most from the lesson, students should be comfortable multiplying fractions by whole numbers. They should also be familiar with customary units for weight (oz., lbs.) and capacity (cups, gallons).
