The Martha's True Stories Buddies Program pairs younger and older elementary school students. As they read, watch and discuss interactive STEM-based stories and videos, students broaden their academic vocabulary, increase their understanding of informational and narrative text, and improve their communication skills. The program was developed for classrooms with diverse learners and includes support for English learners in particular.   • Martha's True Stories Buddies Program: Overview

    The Martha’s True Stories Buddy Program uses the appeal of the popular PBS show Martha Speaks, plus STEM-based interactive texts and videos to help younger and older students learn new vocabulary and improve comprehension. The program was developed for classsrooms with diverse learners and includes supports for English learners (ELs). In a recent study, students in the program outperformed their peers who were not in the program in vocabulary and comprehension.     In this MARTHA SPEAKS video, Martha discovers the painful effects of littering. Alice, Helen, and T.D. share ideas on how to spread the word that littering hurts not only the environment but also those that live in it.     In this MARTHA SPEAKS interactive story students discover how plants and animals depend on each other in an ecosystem. Fallen leaves decay; earthworms eat the leaves and fertilize the dirt.
