  • Musical Concepts - Clarinet

    Leigh Wakefield explains why he so enjoys playing the clarinet. Throughout the clip, he describes why music is like coloring and how mood and feeling can be heard in music.

    Filmed in conjunction with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra Youth Concert, several members of the orchestra share their love of their individual instruments through the instrument’s history, musical quality, function in the orchestra, and how it’s played.

  • Musical Concepts - Viola

    Tim Nelson plays the viola in the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony. In this clip, he explains that he chose the viola at a very young age and has been playing it since orchestra was available in his public school. Because the viola is larger than the violin, the strings are longer and the instrument has a deeper and mellower sound, and to demonstrate, Mr. Nelson plays a short piece by Schubert.

  • Musical Concepts - Cello

    Elise Buffat Nelson demonstrates the versatility of the cello, from the dramatic low notes of the “Jaws” theme music to the calm and melodic piece “The Swan” by Camille Saint-Saens. Ms. Buffat Nelson also presents a short history of the instrument and a demonstration of an invention that changed the way the cello was played.

  • Musical Concepts - Violin

    Benjamin Sung is the concertmaster of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra and has been playing the violin since he was three years old. He enjoys the range of expression that is possible with the violin, a member of the string family, and demonstrates an excerpt from an opera. Mr. Sung also introduces the parts that make up a violin.

  • Musical Concepts - Trombone

    Edward Huttlin has been playing the trombone for almost fifty years, more than thirty of those years with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony. He demonstrates the variety of sounds the instrument can make, including his favorite, the glissando, and he also demonstrates how the musician makes sound come from a brass instrument.

  • Musical Concepts - Conductor

    Jane Linde Capistran, associate conductor of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, explains the duties of the orchestra’s conductor, including choosing musical selections and leading the orchestra in the style and tempo she desires. She uses a baton in her right hand and gestures with her left hand to communicate messages to individual musicians, sections, or the entire orchestra.

  • Musical Concepts - Trumpet

    Tom Strait, a trumpet player with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, explains the basic parts of the trumpet including the valves, mouthpiece, bell, tubing, and the different mutes that trumpet players use. Mr. Strait also introduces the flugel horn and the piccolo trumpet. Students will learn a quick way to make a trumpet at home and a surprising household tool that trumpet players often use when playing jazz music.

    French horn player Karin Wakefield explains the evolution of the modern French horn, the qualities of the sounds the instrument makes, and how the sound is produced.

  • Musical Concepts - Oboe

    Jennifer Peterson demonstrates why the oboe is known as the ‘snake charming instrument,’ explains why one of the most important jobs in the orchestra belongs to the oboe, and how a double-reed instrument is played.

  • Musical Concepts - Mallet Percussion

    Chris Mahan of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra introduces the various members of the percussion family that are played with mallets: xylophone, glockenspiel or orchestral bells, vibraphone, and chimes. Mr. Mahan explains what each instrument is made of and demonstrates how those materials affect each instrument’s sound.

  • Kevin Muiderman: Guitar Maker, Thompson ND

    Kevin Muiderman is a reconstructive plastic surgeon by day, and a guitar maker by night. After medical school, Kevin decided to learn more about guitar building and trained with master builders at the Leeds Guitar Maker's School in Massachusetts. By combining advanced materials like kevlar and carbon fiber with wood and traditional guitar building wisdom, Kevin builds double-top acoustic guitars that are as technically brilliant as they are beautiful.
