This collection features resources from the powerful film The Armor of Light. Two people of faith come together to explore the contradictions of a nation rife with gun violence: a famously anti-abortion evangelical minister risks losing followers when he questions the morality of gun ownership, while a grieving mother dedicates herself to creating change after the shooting of her unarmed teenage son.

    This guide was created to support the use of the documentary film, The Armor of Light, to engage a variety of audiences in a respectful, substantive conversation about gun violence in America. The film may be used as a springboard for conversation that brings new insights, deepens understanding, and identifies shared values. The guide includes tips for dialogue facilitators and discussion prompts. These tips and discussion questions are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of audiences and situations, from faith-based congregations to secular classrooms, and small group meetings to large community forums.

    The Armor of Light follows the journey of Evangelical minister Rob Schenck, who is trying to find the courage to preach about the growing toll of gun violence in America, and Lucy McBath, the mother of an unarmed teenager who was murdered in Florida and whose story cast a spotlight on the state’s “Stand Your Ground” laws.

    In an emotional scene from The Armor of Light, the Rev. Rob Schenck meets Lucy McBath, whose son Jordan Davis was shot to death by a Florida man who attempted to justify the killing by the state’s “stand your ground” law. Schenck and McBath find common ground in their strong Evangelical faith, which they agree should emphasize nonviolence.

    In this excerpt from The Armor of Light, the Rev. There, he puts himself through a disturbing mental exercise, imagining the children of Sandy Hook Elementary School as he squeezes the trigger.
