Tools and Measurement

Science tools help us observe, describe, and quantify our world. Some of them are actual physical objects, and others are reasoning skills that help us with science. Many science tools, such as magnifying glasses, extend our senses and allow us to observe the world in more detailed ways. Other science tools, like charts and journals, extend our memories and allow us to communicate. This set of resources provides early learners with experience using these tools in simple but authentic ways.

  • The Sticker Chart | Sid the Science Kid

Using this resource group, students learn about documentation using charts. If Sid doesn't fill his chore chart with stickers, he'll never get a new Turbo-Robot-Rocketship toy. Sid wonders, who needs charts anyway? After a day of investigating, Sid learns that charts are great science tools that help compare and contrast all kinds of cool stuff like snacks, pets, and even chores! The resource group includes an English and Spanish version of five video clips, as well as the associated Science Adventures Curriculum Guide.

  • The Rolie Polie | Sid the Science Kid

Using this resource group, students learn about scientific observation using a magnifying glass. Sid loves his rolie polie bugs, but they're so little he can't figure out how they move. At school, Sid and his friends explore their world using the magnifying glass to make things look bigger, like freckles on their skin, little pebbles, and rolie polie legs! The resource group includes an English and Spanish version of 5 video clips, as well as the associated Science Adventures Curriculum Guide. • Enough with the Seashells | Sid the Science Kid

In this episode of Sid the Science Kid, Sid uses a new strategy called estimation for making his best guess how many seashells he has.

  • The Whale Episode | Sid the Science Kid

Using this resource group, students learn about non-standard measurement when Sid the Science Kid tries to use a ruler to measure a whale. At school, the class learns how non-standard measurement can be used to measure just about anything. Explore how to accurately measure things with shoes, blocks, and even people! The resource group includes an English and Spanish version of 6 video clips, as well as the associated Science Adventures Curriculum Guide. Watch Sid here or go to http://www.pbs.org/teachers/sid/scienceadventures/ for options to download the science adventures video clips.
