In Part 3 of Slide to the Side, Sid and his classmates tell Miss Susie about how Sid couldn't slide on the floor in his new shoes. She explains that when the rough, rubbery bottoms of Sid's shoes rub against the carpet, it creates friction, keeping him from sliding.
