        Statue of Liberty

        This undated photograph shows the Statue of Liberty in the New York Harbor. The landmark was sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and given to the people of the United States by the people of France to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. The statue measures a little over 151 feet high, while the granite pedestal is 154 feet high.

        This aerial photograph of the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe Island, New York City, was taken on March 11, 1927. “Liberty Enlightening the World” was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States in 1884. Bedloe Island was renamed Liberty Island in 1956.

        Deed of Gift for the Statue of Liberty

A gift from the people of France, the Statue of Liberty was accepted by the U.S. Minister to France, Levi P. Morton, in Paris, on behalf of the people of the United States. The statue, work of sculptor A. Bartholdi, was installed in New York Harbor in 1886.
