In 2000, Russia officially adopted the anthem of the former Soviet Union and a new tricolor flag. The music in this arrangement was written by Alexander Alexandrov, while the lyrics were penned by Sergey Mikhalkov.
The Russian flag consists of three equal horizontal bands of white, blue, and red, which may have been based on those of the Dutch flag. Despite many popular interpretations, there is no official meaning assigned to the colors of the Russian flag. However, it inspired other Slav countries to adopt the same horizontal tricolors, but in different arrangements.
