        Rethinking the Unthinkable

Social scientists have created the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), a guide that measures how susceptible communities are to lasting damage in the wake of natural disasters.  Specialists at North Carolina Sea Grant are working with communities across North Carolina to understand the SVI and to learn how to use it. Social science has helped to create the Social Vulnerability Index, which provides a new way to plan and respond to natural disasters.
