The Artist-Owned Record Label | Hitmakers

Learn how record labels work and how musicians can publish their own music, in this clip from Hitmakers. Rock musician Melissa Etheridge talks about the pioneering founder of Island Records, Chris Blackwell, who was the first to invest in her career. She explains that in the 1980s and 1990s record labels were able to cultivate an artist’s career, not just a hit record. But because artists only earn a small portion of the money a record label makes, Etheridge explains that some musicians now prefer to self-publish their work by promoting it on social media.
