        Kentucky's Governor's Mansion Portraits

        This collection of images shows architecture from the Kentucky Governor's Mansion. The mansion is both a private home and a public building. These portraits are found on the first floor, which hold the public reception and dining rooms as well as a ballroom.

        Completed in 1914, it was Kentucky's second official executive mansion. Designed in the Beaux Arts style popular in the late 19th and early 20th century, the mansion was patterned after France's Petit Trianon.

        First Lady Madelaine McDowell Breckinridge Portrait

        This portrait of Madelaine McDowell Breckinridge hangs in the First Lady’s Parlor. Breckinridge (1872-1920) was one of the most influential women in Kentucky history. She founded many state institutions for social and justice reform and worked ardently for women’s suffrage.

        First Lady Phyllis George Brown Photograph

        This photograph of First Lady Phyllis George Brown hangs in the hallway with photographs of Kentucky’s other First Ladies. The First Lady Gallery is popular with visitors. Mrs. Brown was wife of Governor John Y. Brown, Jr., who served as Governor from 1979 to 1983. Mrs. Brown led an effort to restore the mansion.

        First Lady Mildred Watkins Chandler Portrait

        First Lady Mildred Watkins Chandler posed for this portrait in the parlor. The 1937 painting was done by Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952) of New York. Mrs. Chandler was wife of Governor Albert Benjamin “Happy” Chandler, who served as Governor twice, from 1935 to 1939 and from 1955 to 1959. On loan from Ms. Mimi Lewis in honor of her mother

        Governor Martha Layne Collins Portrait

        This is a photograph of the official portrait of Martha Layne Collins. Governor Collins, Kentucky’s first woman governor, was elected in 1983. Governor Collins was instrumental in successfully bringing Toyota to Kentucky.

        First Lady Judy Patton Photograph

        This photograph of First Lady Judy Patton hangs in the First Lady Gallery in the mansion hallway. Mrs. Patton was married to Governor Paul Patton, who served as Governor from 1995 to 2003. During the Patton administration, the mansion ballroom was the setting for In Performance at the Governor’s Mansion, performances by Kentucky artists that were recorded for broadcast by Kentucky Educational Television.

        This portrait is of Isaac Shelby, who was Kentucky’s first Governor. Shelby served as Governor twice, from 1792 to 1796 and from 1812 to 1816.
