NYC To Install Fencing On George Washington Bridge After Suicide Spike | Human Impact on the Physical Environment | Geography

NEW YORK, NY - FEBRUARY 10: The George Washington Bridge is viewed on February 10, 2015. Suicide attempts off the George Washington Bridge have doubled over the past year with 18 people dying last year alone. It is estimated that every 3.5 days someone attempts suicide from the pedestrian walkway of the bridge. At its highest point, the George Washington Bridge is 25 stories above the Hudson River, making any fall from the bridge lethal. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has approved pedestrian safety fencing along the walkway. The project, which has a budget of up to $47 million, will take eight years to complete.
