Sodium Glass | Raw to Ready: Bombardier

This image taken from Raw to Ready: Bombardier demonstrates that to temper the glass, you put it in molten sodium nitrate. This doesn’t melt the glass, but it heats it up and expands the lattice. Lithium ions are able to move, or diffuse out of the glass, and they’re replaced by sodium atoms. Once this is cool, the lattice compresses back down, leaving a harder glass.
