        Learn about President Nixon's efforts to communicate his justification of the Vietnam War to the American public in the days following the Kent State shootings. In an effort to defuse the mounting tension, Nixon held a press conference to address the crisis on May 5th, 1970. Not satisfied with the outcome, he then went on to make an impromptu visit to the Lincoln Memorialwhere protestors had camped outin an attempt to reach a mutual understanding with the student demonstrators.
