Marian Anderson and the Concert that Challenged Racism

Help students celebrate the courage of Marian Anderson with this PBS NewsHour video and educational resources from April 10, 2014. Marian Anderson, the legendary African-American contralto, sang at the Lincoln Memorial exactly 75 years ago after she was refused a performance at Washington's Constitution Hall. In April of 2014, young people gathered to commemorate Anderson’s effort to strike out against racism through the power and beauty of her voice. For further background and materials to support student understanding of the issue, see the Teacher’s Guide, Student Handout, and Informational Text.
