        CCMP6 - Attend to Precision

Through Common Core, teachers have learned that they no longer just lecture students about how to solve problems nor do students work alone to find answers. In this module, you’ll watch classroom teachers supporting their students’ learning and reasoning skills by having them work in groups, defend their answers, and explain in precise detail their mathematical processes to find the correct answer.

CCMP6 - Part 1 - Organize Work with Clear Definitions (Example One)

Effective communication can be very difficult. In this module, we see how a teacher uses open-ended and repeated questions to help her students develop precise mathematical communication skills.

CCMP6 - Part 2 - Organize Work with Clear Definitions (Example Two)

Precise communication can help students become more proficient at solving mathematical problems. In this example, we watch a teacher demonstrating how precision can enhance the math skill set of her students.

CCMP6 - Part 3 - Examining Claims and Using Specific Definitions (Part One)

Students, when exposed to new situations in mathematics, must be very specific in their use of terms. When they explain their reasoning to others, they must be able to use the new terms to make sure others know exactly how they apply to the math process.

CCMP6 - Part 4 - Examining Claims and Using Specific Definitions (Part Two)

In this segment, the teacher repeats her questions numerous times in an effort to have students to explain their reasoning to her. When this occurs, they are explaining the processes to fellow group members thus providing a “learning moment” for the entire group. She is encouraging them apply new skills that can be applied to math problems now and in the future.
