In his most recent endeavor to embrace and utilize social media, President Barack Obama used the popular social networking service Twitter to address public inquiries during a town hall meeting. Users from all over the U.S. and the world tweeted their questions and concerns. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey participated in the event by selecting and posing a handful of questions to the president. Twitter is a micro-blogging and social networking service that was founded in 2006 and has since gained massive popularity. The service has more than 200 million registered users, including the president of the United States. In the connected PBS NewsHour lesson plan, students will understand and discuss the role of social media in the political process.
