Steel | Raw to Ready: Komatsu

This clip from Raw to Ready: Komatsu focuses on how the shortage of wood charcoal used to strengthen iron leads Abraham Darby to find a cheaper alternative: coal. The sulfur in coal makes iron brittle so Darby creates a system for baking out the impurities in coal using a furnace. The doors open to cheaper coal strengthened iron. Leading to the discovery of a steel alloy that is used today to create the massive frame for Komatsu's giant earthmover.
