        In this segment of Secrets of Selfridges, learn about how Selfridges pushed the boundaries of what was accepted in British society. Like the famous windows, the rest of the technology and practices of Selfridges department store was designed to sell a lifestyle. Personally, Selfridge spared no expense trying to make it as a British gentleman, and while profits were up, the store could afford to support his extravagance. However, by 1939 the store was in debt and the board of Selfridges stripped him of his managerial authority. Selfridge passed away in 1947 without a penny to his name, but the legacy of Selfridges has lived on.
