This video shows how one experiment was designed to test specific factors on oyster reefs along the coast. Students will also see how the research team had to come together and redesign the experiment after it failed. Dr. Kimbro, Dr. Hughes, and their crew devised an experiment to measure how well oyster spat (juvenile oysters newly settled on the reef) fare at test sites from Florida to North Carolina. They hope to better understand how predation and environmental factors affect the spat’s chances of survival. The first iteration of the experiment failed, spurring a massive experiment redesign.
