        In this segment of Secrets of Selfridges, learn about the launch week of Selfridges. Londoners were astonished by every aspect of the department store from the architecture to the ambiance of the shopping experience. Selfridge wanted shopping to be participatory and tactile, a completely new idea for 20th century London. Additionally, department stores offered a place for women to be out in public without a male escort -- an unprecedented concept in Edwardian London -- which helped Selfridges' sales given the complex fashion trends of the time.
