        Can Facebook and Google help tackle the fake news problem?

        In the days just after the presidential election, the top result returned by the Google News service for the search “final election results” was an article from a dubious website that claimed—wrongly—that Donald Trump had won the popular vote. And over the course of the campaign, false articles spread like wildfire over social networks such as Facebook, spreading both fake statistics and accounts of events that had never happened. In fact, an analysis by BuzzFeed News found that in the final three months of the election season, fake news stories on Facebook outperformed top real news stories published by reputable news providers such as The New York Times, the Washington Post, and NBC News.
