        Conradin of Swabia and Friedrich of Baden awaiting sentence, 1785

        Tischbein, Johann Heinrich Wilhelm (1751-1829). Medium: oil on canvas. Date: 1785. Conradin (1252-1268), son of Holy Roman Emperor Conrad IV, duke of Swabia, titular king of Jerusalem and Sicily was the last legitimate Hohenstaufen; in his attempt to recover his Kingdom of Sicily he was defeated (1268) by Charles at Tagliacozzo; He was captured and executed at Naples, together with his childhood friend Friedrich of Baden; Provenance: Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia.
