How Do Balloons Work? | Stem in 30

Learn about bouyancy and how it lets hot air balloons take flight!

        Hot Air Balloon

By applying heat to the air molecules inside a hot air balloon, those particles begin moving faster and taking up more space, forcing some air out of the system. This loss of mass enables the entire balloon to weigh less than the air surrounding it.

        Gas Balloon

Gas-filled balloons work differently than regular balloons fueled by hot air. When a gas balloon is filled with a gas that's lighter than air, the combined weight of the balloon and the gas will weigh less than the air around it, letting the entire balloon float!
