Teacher Jenny Tandy (Kerrick Elementary, Louisville, Ky.) scaffolds specific comprehension thought processes her fourth-grade students need to synthesize what they have read. She encourages the students to use text features and questioning strategies using post-it notes.
Being able to synthesize what they read extends the literal meaning enabling the reader to make inferences, comparisons, and decisions about a text's overall meaning.
