Edgar and Rena Coen In Front Of Their Kansas Dugout | Ken Burns: The Dust Bowl

Edgar and Rena Coen homesteaded in southwestern Kansas, at first living in a dugout with just a few windows near the ceiling to let in some light, and a shed-like entryway that doubled as the kitchen. As their family grew, their plans to build an above-ground home were thwarted by the hard times of the 1930s. They lost one child and one grandchild to "dust pneumonia."
