The First Meeting of General George Washington and the Marquis de La Fayette

This etching depicts the first meeting of George Washingon and the Marquis de La Fayette on August 5, 1777, after La Fayette volunteered to be a Major General in the American Continental Army. George Washington was then the Commander and Chief of the Continental Army. La Fayette was only 19 years old, and he and the older George Washington remained close friends after the war. This etching was produced by American printmakers Currier and Ives in 1876, likely to commemorate the centennial of the American Revolution.
