        American School, (19th century), American. 1883. Chester Arthur (1829-86) was the 21st President of the USA (1881-85); Vice President under James Garfield (1831-81) who was assassinated; civil service reformer and passed the Pendleton Act; the architect John Augustus Roebling (1806-69) invented the use of the twisted wire rope cable and built the gothic piers, which were completed by his son Augustus; the bridge connects Brooklyn and Manhattan Island.
