Cheryl Pan began dancing when she was five years old and attended a dance school in China. She learned a variety of Chinese folk and classic dances.
The fan dance she performs is a modern variation she choreographed of a traditional Chinese fan dance. The fan dance is used in celebrations and particularly in celebration of the Chinese New Year. Pan says that her modern version is faster than the slower traditional dance, and she thinks adding modern movement makes it more interesting to watch, especially for young people.
Pan says that although the dance seems simple, the dance requires a lot of practice in order to perform it well, but that it is a very fun dance to do. She dances to a piece of music by Chinese composer Song Zuying that expresses the happy life and joy of living. The dance expresses a love of life and the expectations one has for the future.
