        Ernie Pyle | Ken Burns: The War

        View images of Ernie Pyle, an American war correspondent and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, who covered the front lines of World War II in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific. Pyle wrote stories about infantrymen, and his work was carried by hundreds of daily newspapers in the United States. Pyle was killed by enemy fire on the island of Ie Shima (Iejima) during the Battle of Okinawa, in August, 1945.
