Diamonds from Jewels Dance | Pennsylvania Ballet at 50

Diamonds from Jewels by George Balanchine highlights the science and precision of dance choreography in a small set of dancers and in a full company movement. Balanchine was inspired by jewelry designer Claude Arpels, and chose music revealing the essence of each jewel. Each section is distinct in music and mood. Emeralds recalls the 19th century dances of the French Romantics. Rubies is crisp and witty, epitomizing the collaboration of Stravinsky and Balanchine. Diamonds recalls the grandeur of Imperial Russia. Diamonds, the third section of Jewels uses Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3 in D major, Op. 29.
