When Fashion Meets Art | Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace

Watch Kehinde Wiley weave fashion and tradition together for this exhibition by commissioning  designer Givenchy to craft couture gowns for his subjects to pose in. This is in part an effort of imbue his work with beauty and glamour, and the measure is also symbolic: such handmade, custom pieces haven't historically been made for black women, so Wiley is out to change that. There is a tradition of elite fashion being featured in classical painting, and also an important political intersection of fashion and performance in the black community. Fashion offers poor and disenfranchised people the opportunity to create a mask of power, and has been an important political tool for identity-making.
