Middle school mathematics teacher Tracy Poulin leads her 7th grade class through a lesson on ratios and proportional reasoning, in this media gallery from WGBH.

Mathematics teacher Tracy Poulin introduces a problem in which her 7th grade students need to work out what table to sit at to get the most pizza. As students work in groups using different strategies to solve the problem, Ms. Poulin circulates throughout the classroom and checking in.

Ms. Poulin introduces the problem students will be working on in class. She tells the students to make a guess at first and then use math methods to prove their conjectures.

Ms. Poulin explains the math practices she uses in her classroom. Ms. Poulin’s students talk about working in groups and sharing.

In wrapping up, student representatives from each group explain the strategies they used to solve the problem.

Anne Collins, Director of Mathematics Programs at Lesley University, discusses the Common Core State Standards, specifically the Standards of Mathematical Practices, as well as the strategies Ms. Poulin used in her classroom.
