Are We Alone? Ch. 2: The Wink Method | Genius by Stephen Hawking

In this clip from Genius by Stephen Hawking, learn about potential other alien solar systems in the universe. Using a bright spotlight and miniature planets, the volunteers set out to replicate the layout of a distant solar system. Using a pulley system to allow a planet to pass in front of a star, they employ the "wink" method to detect an orbiting object. When the light intensity decreases it infers and object has passed in front of the light source. This method was first discussed in 1984. It becomes evident quickly it is very hard to spot a planet going past a star from Earth. The volunteers are given and a telescope and a lumen monitor that is far more sensitive than the naked eye to learn how to spot a planet going past a star; as well as how big it is.
