In this clip from Genius by Stephen Hawking, discover if free will really exists using the results from an EEG experiment. Three volunteers recreate a famous experiment first performed by Benjamin Libet that looks at whether free will exists. This involves using brain scanning techniques to record electrical brain activity at the point of making simple decisions, such as pressing a button. The experiment shows that at the point of time people have decided to make an action, to some degree the decision has already been made by unconscious brain activity. This leads to difficult questions about whether life is predetermined or not and whether free will is an illusion or not.
