Images from the South Pacific | Ken Burns: The War

View images from the South Pacific during World War II. World War II was the most destructive, and most costly, war in human history. It involved dozens of countries, spanned continents, and resulted in the loss of 50 million lives. In the South Pacific, the United States, under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, fought the Japanese in brutal battles from 1941, when the U.S. entered the war, to through 1945, when Japan surrendered.
