        John Lewis grew up in rural Alabama in the 1940s where segregation was a way of life. To question, challenge or simply appear to challenge the rigid Jim Crow laws that preserved white supremacy, African Americans risked intimidation, being beaten or lynched. Fearful for her son, John Lewis’s mother warned him to be cautious and “don’t get in the way.”
