        Students were an integral part of the Civil Rights Movement and were often the first to be beaten, arrested and jailed. As chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), John Lewis was chosen to speak for the students at the March on Washington. But when he drafted a speech that was considered radical, the elders of the movement pressured him to compromise and tone it down.
