Folksinger Tom Bledsoe was inspired to write this song as he was leaving his house one day. He passed by a pond and saw five little ducklings sitting on a limb in the water. It sparked his imagination and he wrote the song as he drove away.
The song is a reworking of the traditional children’s song and finger game “Five Little Monkeys.” It’s an example of writing new words to old music.
The featured instruments in the segment are jaw harp and frame drum (bodhrán). The rhythms of the instruments and stepping all reflect and emphasize the rhythm of the spoken words in the performance.
