        Circular Cornet, c. 1861 | A State Divided

This brass horn, called a circular cornet, belonged to Joseph Dudley. He was a musician in the Union Army. Brass bands were very popular during the Civil War. Music was important for soldiers on both sides of the war. They would play music for marching or at ceremonies, balls, and parades. They would even play during battle. Musicians sometimes fought in battle or carried stretchers for the wounded.
