The cover of this piece of sheet music shows two members of the Louisville Citizen Guards. There were groups of citizen soldiers in towns and cities across Kentucky. People were very proud of their local guards. This song was written to honor them. In 1860, the guards were organized to create the Kentucky State Guard. However, many members of the state guard left to join the Confederacy.
