        Goblet, c. 1838-1861 | A State Divided

This coin silver goblet belonged to George Washington Johnson. He was a lawyer, farmer, and politician in Kentucky. He was pro-slavery. After the war started, he wanted Kentucky to join the Confederacy. He helped form a Confederate government in the state, and he was one of its leaders. The Union drove them out of the area. Johnson later died from a wound he got at the Battle of Shiloh.
