This badge is part of a souvenir from the Grand Army of the Republic, or the G.A.R. The G.A.R. was founded in 1866 for men who had served in the Union Army. The G.A.R. gave veterans friendship and support from fellow soldiers who had shared their experiences. The group had a lot of influence in the country. Five U.S. Presidents were members.
