        Handmade Confederate Flag, c. 1863 | A State Divided

This hand-sewn Confederate flag is made of red, white, and blue silk with paper stars. In both the North and South, women used flags as a symbol of patriotism. Women formed flag committees; sewed their own flags; and donated flags to troops, politicians, and governments. They even wrote poetry about flags. For many women, making and displaying flags were the best ways to show their support.
